What SCAN Needs from the Public

SCAN has been in a contractual relationship with the City of Seattle as the Designated Public Access Manager since May of 2006. SCAN's contractual relationship with the City of Seattle is slated to terminate on December 31, 2010, unless extended by mutual agreement of the parties.

SCAN's goal is to remain the Designated Public Access Manager for the City of Seattle, through a renewal of its current contract for another four years at the current funding level of $650,000 annually, with additional funds for capital improvements, equipment upgrades, and technology improvements for the duration of the four year contract.

Moreover SCAN is seeking the following outcomes:

1. A better negotiated contract with the City of Seattle that addresses policy issues that will ensure funding for SCAN and the local communication services it provides to individuals, community groups, organizations, institutions, and businesses.

2. Broadband upgrades to enable connection with the new broadband networks being realized by the City and in various stages of development within the City.

3. Creating multiple points of access for SCAN through fiber optic lines much like the future vision plan for media-capable spaces for Community Centers, Libraries, and Town Hall complexes.

4. $500,000 in capital funds to allow upgrades in transmission services using better equipment and technology with the ability to distribute programming utilizing more delivery platforms.

5. The ability for SCAN to communicate and to troubleshoot with Cable Companies directly when addressing issues of services in specific neighborhoods, dedicated channels for telecast airing on cable, and SCAN's program content information availability in program guides and communication pieces for distribution to the public.

6. Ongoing and readily available information to SCAN and the public pertaining to SCAN viewership profile information.

SCAN needs the public's help to achieve this goal. Here are ways that you can help:

1. Write letters to the Mayor and individual City Councilmembers (see contact information below). Share your experience with SCAN, as a viewer, producer/provider, or user of SCAN services, and why you feel SCAN is an important community resource. A sample letter is available for download below.

2. Attend public budget hearings. At these hearings, sign-up to speak during the public comment period. If you are a speaker, you are not representing SCAN but you are speaking as a concerned citizen about your experience with SCAN.

3. Join SCAN's mailing list by emailing your contact information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . This way you will receive regular updates on the contract renewal process and how you can help. SCAN respects your privacy and does not share your information with other sources.

4. If you are a member of an organization that invites speakers to its meetings (such as Rotary Clubs or Chamber of Commerces), speak with the Program Committee Chair about inviting SCAN to speak at a meeting.

5. Get the word out. Make copies of this information and give it to others.

6. Become a friend of SCAN on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, watch your emails, and watch our website (www.scantv.org) for updates on what you can do.
