El Centro de La Raza College Readiness Program Print E-mail

Background: El Centro de la Raza seeks to raise the awareness level of the general public, politicians, business and civic leaders toward the needs of the Chicano/Latino community. Specifically, to help the Chicano/Latino communities in the Seattle/King County area empower itself and become united. The organization started the College Readiness Program, Building Inspiration through Preparation.

Founder and Executive Director Roberto Maestas says, “ Latino students need all of the help they can get to be convinced that they can go to college to better maneuver the system to have an increased chance of being accepted in to college and to get assistance to finance higher education. “

Profile: Delfino Munoz, Chief Sealth High School Teacher, hopes the program will result in recruiting more of the best and brightest to stay in the Latino community. This will increase the number of professionals and college graduates, enabling them to reach their full human potential. Phil Brockman, Ballard High School Principal, says the program provides support through tutorials, information and family engagement to send the message that Latino students are important to the community and can be successful following high school.
